How Lifeline Works
A discount on service
Lifeline is a federal assistance program for qualifying households. USAC describes support of up to $9.25 a month for eligible service, or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands. The amount and resulting bill depend on the service. This is not a cash payment or a guarantee of a free handset.
One benefit per household
People who live together and share income and expenses count as a household. Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed for that household, even if several members qualify. People at the same address who maintain separate economic households may need to complete a household worksheet.
Keep the benefit active
USAC or the state checks eligibility each year. Respond if asked to recertify. For service with no monthly out-of-pocket payment, use it at least every 30 days. Tell the provider within 30 days if your address or eligibility changes, or the household has duplicate benefits.
