Understanding Data and Hotspot Allowances

Read beyond unlimited
A plan can describe unlimited data while applying separate conditions to priority data, video or hotspot. Look for a high-speed allowance, a reduced-speed condition and any network-management text. Missing information should become a question for the carrier.
Check hotspot separately
Hotspot shares a phone connection with another device. The plan may have a different allowance or speed for that use. An unlimited phone-data headline does not establish unlimited high-speed hotspot. Check the hotspot panel and the carrier’s plan terms.
Compare against your usage
Review recent usage records before choosing a plan. Note video, travel and laptop tethering separately, because they can have different conditions. Usage records help you estimate your own needs; they cannot guarantee future network speeds.
